You're right. It's R for Raleigh and DU for Durham.

Lol I'm glad you asked, because I spent two months wondering that until my dad explained last week. I felt silly asking, but it was driving me crazy! I think they should have called it RAleigh-Durham and it would have been RAD.

Airport codes often have very little similarity to the city they serve and instead refer to the original name of the airport (MSY - New Orleans, MCO - Orlando are two that come to mind). We're lucky it is this close.

i was also considering "Raleigh-Durham-University" as in: the only things worth mentioning in the area are the city of Raleigh, the city of Durham, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
