COLUMBIA – Friday proved to be a momentous day for South Carolina athletics.
Not only did the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees approve contracts for its nine assistant football coaches and Director of Strength and Conditioning, but announced a new blockbuster agreement with Under Armour.
The Gamecocks deal with the Baltimore, Maryland-based apparel company is worth $71.5 million over 10 years. The amount ranks second in the Southeastern Conference and seventh nationally.
"I am very pleased with where we are with Under Armour and the relationship with Kevin Plank and his staff," said USC Athletics Director Ray Tanner. "It means more to me than just having a deal with a company we partner with.
"We've been with them quite a while... he and his staff. We feel like it is a part of our family. Having an opportunity to move forward is tremendous. That Under Armour brand is extremely strong."
The deal, which begins July 1, 2016 and ends June 30, 2026, includes the company paying USC a signing bonus of $2 million, 45 days following the full execution of the agreement.
Under Armour will pay the university $24.5 million, which will be paid in installments throughout the contract.
The company will also pay USC a baseball rights fee of $500,000 to be paid in equal installments in each contract year.
The company will also provide the Gamecocks with $44.5 million in Under Armour products throughout the term of the contract. That will be used to outfit the university's teams, coaches and athletic department staff.
Under Armour will have exclusive rights to sell performance athletic products, authentic competition products and replica products in all sales outlets.
"I think Ray Tanner negotiated a very good contract with Under Armour," said USC Board of Trustee Chairman Gene Warr. "I think Under Armour obviously likes the University of South Carolina and we like Under Armour."
The Board also authorized the contracts of USC's assistant football coaches. They will make a combined $3.950 million.
Last year's staff earned $3.905 million. But, when Grady Brown is added to the mix that total increased to $4.225 million.
Brown was an on-field assistant coach until last season when he was made a quality control coach.
Defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson leads the way. He will make $750,000. He has a three-year contract.
The other coach with a three-year deal is Co-Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach Kurt Roper, who will make $700,000 per season.
He is followed by Assistant Head Coach Defense/Defensive Line coach Lance Thompson with $500,000 in each of his two seasons.
The remainder of the staff is on 18-month contracts. Offensive line coach Shawn Elliott will make $500,000.
He is followed by Co-Offensive Coordinator/Wide Receivers Bryan McClendon, who will make $450,000. He is followed by special teams coach/inside linebackers Coleman Hutzler ($350,000) and running backs coach Bobby Bentley ($300,000)
Outside linebacker coach Michael Peterson and tight end coach Patrick Washington will each make $200,000.
Director of Football Strength and Conditioning Jeffery Dillman will earn $400,000.
The coaches all have several incentives, based on the Gamecocks postseason play.
"I know that, when (USC) coach (Will) Muschamp and I sat down, it was important to him that he go out and hire a great staff," said Tanner. "Certainly we didn't want to put any limitations on that. While we must be fiscally responsible, we were in a situation where we could go out and hire top-notch assistants."
The football program has a much larger recruiting office than it did previously.
"While we do have limits financially, he and I discussed in detail his plan in order to put a staff together, a recruiting office and the components that go into that," said Tanner. "I believe we have 11 additional staff members than we had with the previous staff."
